We are sad to announce the passing of Fredrick Edward Edmunds of Auburn NY. He died at age 91 on March 12,2024. Fredrick passed away surrounded by his loved ones after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Port Byron to the late Mabel and Thomas Edmunds. He graduated from Port Byron High School, Class of 1950. He served in the United States Army honorably from 1950-1953 in the 319th Field Artillery, 82nd Airborne Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC. In addition to his service at Fort Bragg, Corporal Edmunds participated at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada, in the future testing and development of American nuclear proliferation through his participation in direct nuclear detonation experiments.
Fred then went on to have a career as a self-employed mason for approximately 40 years. He married the love of his life Deidra Edmunds on November 5, 1957, they were married 67 years, and raised four children. He greatly enjoyed his retirement spending time in Okeechobee, Florida during the winter months and summers in Auburn, NY. Fred and his wife loved to RV. We cannot forget his hardworking, strong-willed personality. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Deidra; and three of their four children, Shawnette Ruzicka, James (Cathy) Edmunds, and Robert (Beth) Edmunds; five grandchildren, Charles (Drew) Stebbins-Harrison, Jonathan (Amethyst) Edmunds, Ashley (Dan) Edmunds-Alfieri, Heather (Joe) Edmunds, and James (Stephanie) Edmunds. Fred also loved to be visited by his three great-grandchildren, Mabel Edmunds, James Edmunds, and Caroline Alfieri. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Crest and his brother Thomas Edmunds JR.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his daughter Patricia Edmunds-Stebbins, and his sister Marjorie Lepak.
A private burial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Fred’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
